How Sabbath Is One Of God’s best “Astronaut Training” Programs
There seems to be this argument over whether ceremonial law has been done away with. Has Christ filled all the ceremonial laws (including Sabbath) so that we no longer need to participate in them?
The problem with this argument is that it seems to miss God’s primary concern for us in understanding ceremonial law.
I am not an expert in ceremonial law and I will leave that argument to the experts but my heart cries for unity and I believe we can be unified on the following issue
Hebrews 10:1 tells me that Ceremonial law are a foreshadowing of better things, Why is it important for me to understand ceremonial law? So that I can understand heaven and even God himself better.
Let’s talk about Sabbath really quick.
I have been told that Sabbath is a ceremonial Law that has been done away with.
The question I pose, Is Sabbath for us here on earth or is it more for us to understand God in heaven?
Let me illustrate:
When a Astronaut is chosen to make a repair outside the the space station, She will begin training by getting into a swimming pool and go through the same exercises that she will go through in her spacewalk. She will get into the pool fully suited up and assemble and reassemble all the parts as if she was in space doing the actual repairs.
Her training is a shadow of what is to come. It is training for a future event.
The question here is, does the training really mean anything? Did she repair anything in space? Did this practice in the swimming pool accomplish anything of lasting significance?
The answer is simply no…. It’s a foreshadowing of what is to come. It is a training for a work that is in the future.
So we might have a bunch of people come along and say that the swimming pool exercise isn’t really a spacewalk and it does not repair anything and therefore it’s not doing any good.
Would that group of people be right?
Technically that group would be right. It doesn’t accomplish anything in space but it does give training in a friendlier and forgiving environment and the training makes sure the important event is done correctly and without mistakes.
Whenever the Bible says in Hebrews 10:1
The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming–not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship.
The Law of Sabbath is a foreshadowing of things to come. Some people come along and say “We see it’s not the real thing, so you shouldn’t be remembering the Sabbath.” and they are technically right. Earthly Sabbaths are a replica of the real thing in the Heavenly realm.
The question to ask here is, Does Sabbath still have eternal significance ?
YES, it teaches me to be prepared for an eternal life with God
God wants me to be prepared for the next life and trained in his ways. I see Sabbath as a ONE of a kind opportunity to begin training here on earth, so I can be prepared for my spacewalk into eternity.
The day if Sabbath should be an exercise in the following things:
Submission to God,
Learning His ways.
Studying His word.
Learning to focus on the things of Heaven.
Learning to pray and praise.
Resting from this world and longing for the things of God.
A day to join together as believers and unite in focus on God and praise to God.
These have value beyond this world.
So the next time someone says that my observance of Sabbath is a waste of time, I will be thinking about the spacewalk of eternal life and will be reminding myself that i am in training inside Gods Nasa program and Sabbath is a class in Eternity 101.
